Why do I need an Ultrasound?

A positive pregnancy test is an important first step, but it may not tell you everything you need to know about your pregnancy. An ultrasound can provide valuable information about what is happening right now and help you better understand the path ahead.

Is the Pregnancy Developing?

An ultrasound can help determine whether a pregnancy appears to be developing as expected. Depending on how far along you are, an ultrasound may be able to detect signs of a developing pregnancy, including cardiac activity.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, dizziness, or fainting, you should seek medical care right away.

How Far Along am I?

It isn’t always easy to know exactly how far along you are. Your dates may be uncertain, your periods may be irregular, or you simply may not remember the first day of your last period.

An ultrasound can help estimate the gestational age of your pregnancy. Knowing how far along you are can help you understand your pregnancy and the options available to you.

Where Is the Pregnancy Located?

An ultrasound can also help determine whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus.

A pregnancy that develops outside the uterus is called an ectopic pregnancy. This can become a serious medical emergency and requires medical evaluation and treatment.
